Exploring the A-to-Z of Cleansing Ingredients

Last week, we delved into conventional cleansers and the ingredients within them that can affect even the healthiest skin. Indeed, skin cleansing is a science in itself and serves as the cornerstone of the skincare pyramid.

The question remains: what ingredients should one look for in a cleanser?

To address this question, let's start with the basics, or better yet, with the foundation of almost any cleanser – surfactants. A surfactant is essentially the ingredient responsible for removing dirt and skin oils from your skin. And it's crucial, otherwise, it wouldn't truly function as a cleanser, right?

Here's an easy-to-digest overview of surfactants:

1. Soap.

A product we turned to throughout the COVID pandemic, thanks to its fantastic cleansing power. However, it can be a tad harsh due to its high pH. As a result, it's suitable for use on oily and normal skin, but not recommended for individuals with sensitive skin types or skin conditions that can worsen with higher pH levels, like rosacea.

2. Sulphates.

Not all sulphates are created equal. The rule of thumb is to stick with natural options, like Coco Sulphate. Natural sulphates are suitable for all skin types since they have a low pH (acidic). Depending on your facial cleanser's formula, it might contain a high or low percentage of sulphates. In the latter scenario, it's likely mixed with other gentle surfactants (more on those below) to create a more delicate product, ideal for dry and prone-to-dryness skin. In fact, if you experience this sensation after washing, your aim should be to select a product with a surfactant from the category below.

3. Other gentle surfactants.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Coco Glucoside, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, and Lauryl Glucoside are your allies. These cleansing ingredients will allow you to enjoy a rich lather without leaving your skin feeling tight or dry.

In conclusion.

Understanding the role of surfactants is a fundamental step in choosing the right cleanser for your skin type. The diverse options available allow you to tailor your cleansing routine to your unique needs, whether you have oily, sensitive, or dry skin. By being informed about these ingredients, you're better equipped to achieve a radiant and healthy complexion.
